Keep Your Trees in Great Health With These Easy Tips

Historic Charleston, SC is one of the most beautiful American cities. Residents like to spend their spare time walking the shores of Folly Beach and shopping in Charleston City Market. Many residents have large houses and equally large properties. If you own a home, here a few tips to help make sure that your trees stay in perfect shape.

Pick the Right Tree

Expert landscaping starts with the right trees. If you want to add trees to your current property, there are a few things to keep in mind when you shop. Select trees with the right container. Good choices include bare-root seedlings, burlap-wrapped trees, and trees in containers. Look for healthy bark. All limbs should be in good shape. Each branch should be distributed in a way that avoids overlap and that has a secure attachment to the trunk.

Add Mulch

Once the tree is in place, it needs mulch. Use this for new trees and your existing plantings. Mulch provides a blanket that keeps moisture and heat away. It also helps the tree continue to remain moist. Use all-natural materials, such as wood chips, for the best results. Both large and small trees benefit from the use of mulch. For smaller trees, aim for a three-foot mulch diameter. Larger trees may need as much as 10 feet for full protection.

Keep It Watered

Water is essential for keeping your trees in fabulous shape. The good news is that Charleston gets lots of water. In fact, you can expect about 48 inches of annual precipitation. That’s a full 10 inches more than the average amount across the United States.

However, it still helps to keep a close eye on the amount of water your trees are getting. Newly planted trees need more water to help them establish a good foundation. Take a trowel and dig about two inches next to your tree. Note the condition of the soil. If it’s damp and moist, that means the trees are getting enough water. If it’s dry, you might want to add some more water.

Proper Pruning and Trimming

Pruning and trimming trees are important if you have trees on your property. Carefully examine all of the trees on your property at least twice a year. You’re looking for branches that have clearly stopped growing. If you have trees that flower each spring, after they’re done blooming is the best time to prune them.

Keeping your trees in perfect shape pays off with lovely grounds that delight all of the senses.
